Who We Are

First Baptist Church is a member of the American Baptist Churches USA, the American Baptist Churches of the Great Rivers Region and the Jersey County Ministerial Alliance.

What to Expect When Attending a Service

When You Arrive

You may park in any available space in our parking lot or behind the church next to the water tower.  There is also parking along the street and spots for those with disabled parking placards on the east side of the building. An elevator is available at the East Entrance. The restrooms are just down the hallway from the church office.

What Should You Wear?

Dress as casually or as formally as you like! The majority of our congregation dresses casually however some of our members like to wear their Sunday best! Do whichever you feel most comfortable with!

During Worship

First Baptist is a friendly church. Be prepared to be warmly greeted and engaged in conversation. When you arrive at the door, you will be offered a worship bulletin with service info and activities for the week.  If you arrive late, just help yourself to a seat.  If you need to leave early, nobody will complain if you slip out. You may sit anywhere, no seats are reserved.   The service will include a mix of traditional hymns and contemporary worship choruses, soloists and choral music.  You are not expected to contribute to the work of the church (that’s our responsibility) so don’t feel embarrassed to pass the collection plate without putting anything in it.  Many church members contribute once a month, so you won’t be the only one just passing the plate on. Brochures with information about our church are available at the back of the sanctuary.

Communion

The first Sunday of each month is “Communion Sunday.”  We invite all who have professed faith in Christ, regardless of their church affiliation, to participate with us if they like.  If you are unsure of the meaning of communion, feel free to ask the pastor, or the person who greeted you at the door and we will be glad to explain further!

After Worship

After the service you are invited to attend a Sunday School class.   These classes meet each Sunday at 10:45 am – 11:45 am. Also, don’t forget  to stop by the coffee area to grab a cup of coffee and a cookie before heading to class.
